Global Youth Conference

After coming back from each local program, participating youth prepared their final presentation to demonstrate what they had learned throughout the program. Knowledge and experience were shared among the whole group, and the promise to bring their experience back home were made at this conference.
The Global Youth Conference composed of 5 parts; course presentation, country meeting, country presentation, evaluation, completion ceremony, and the farewell party was held at ANA Hotel in Tokyo.

Part 1: Course Presentation
NPO Management Course

After 2 weeks of discussion, lecture, workshops, and site visits, the NPO Management presented the theoretical and practical aspects of managing non-profit organizations.

The presentation comprised four main sections:

  1. The Resolution: This statement conveyed the group members promise to share what they have learned and to sustain the network that has started at the Ren05 program. Modeled after the UN, the resolution summarized key lessons from their NPO course and a vision for the alumni organizations.
  1. The Handbook(English / Japanese): This ten-page guide combines the theory of NPO management with practical questions and activities that a group or individual can apply to their organization.  They gave a brief overview of the contents that addressed five elements of NPO management (organizational philosophy, funding, human resources, public relations, strategic plan): definitions, assessment tools, and practical advice.  The Handbook reflects the key lessons learned during this conference and is a guide for understanding and creating a strategic plan that can lead to a healthier and more productive NPO.
  1. Case Studies: The group presented several challenges faced by non-profit organizations, including geographic, organizational, communication, and funding issues. The case studies illustrated how the Handbook could aid an AA in assessing and understanding their current strengths, weaknesses and clarifying plans for a more active future.
  1. A Strategic Plan:  Using a specific project idea, gPictures through the Eyes of Childrenh, the group presented an example of a strategic plan, employing the five elements of NPO management.  This strategic plan demonstrates how good NPO management relates to effective project management for an organization.

They explored a complex concepts and theories and demonstrated tangible tools and methods to use these ideas in realistic situations.  The presentation also demonstrated the groupfs commitment to sharing what they have learned with their respective AAs and continue to work together, to use what they have gained to improve their AAs and in turn, their communities.

Social Contribution Activities Course

Why social contribution activities (SCA)?
This was one of key discussion themes that the participants engaged in.  The conclusions that the SCA course members came up with were: first, SCAs help maintain the development of our society.  In other words, SCAs help address the present need of the community; rebuild relationships such as, human to nature relationships, human to human relationships, and human to societal relationships and restore strong and self-sufficient communities, that are capable of providing their own needs and develop a global society.  Second, all these factors contribute to creating community conscious citizens that can participate within society.

The SCA course members proposed four projects that all the participants should be working on after this program.

1.  Relief Fund Raising
2.  Our World: One World - Photographs Taken by Children
3.  Effective Social Leadership (ESL)
4.  Mail Buddies

The participants of the SCA course have learnt and experienced a great deal during the 2-week program through the various activities and exchange of ideas with the SWY, SSEAYP and INDEX members.  It is through social contribution that we can make this world a better place and we strive to put our plans into actions and to think globally and act locally.  What we will do today will affect tomorrow.
